Dave is a constantly metamorphosing bug mute. He is a surface scavenger along with his human partner Benson.

Appearance

Dave has six different stages in his regenerative life cycle: a larva, a grub, an awkward teen, an adult, mega-buff hero mode, and a decrepit senior citizen.

Dave's larva form is semi-transparent with tiny pink appendages. Most of Dave's body is wrapped in a green cocoon at this stage.

His little grub form is a light blue exoskeleton with a green mask and stomach, and delicate appendages in the form of four arms, two legs, and two antennae.

Dave's teenage form is similar to his adult form, except that he is slimmer and has pink acne instead of facial hair.

His typical form is adult, is a pink exoskeleton with blue spots along the back, a green mask and stomach, and pink facial accents.

When buffed out, Dave quadruples in size thanks to his newly bulging biceps, quadriceps, pectorals, and abdominal muscles. His pink exoskeleton turns a deep purple, and he gains orange pincers, a blue-tipped orange horn, and transparent wings.

However, Dave loses his super buff form as quickly as he gains it, suddenly becoming a wrinkled elderly insect with drooping antennae. In his old form, Dave's bright exoskeleton fades to yellow and brown.

Dave eventually shuffles off his mortal coil and in the midst of all that dead skin, reveals a little larva crying for attention. Thus, the cycle begins anew.

Personality

Dave's personality generally depends on his current life cycle stage. As a larva and little grub, Dave is needy and 100% dependent on Benson as he must be carried everywhere. In his teenage form, Dave suffers from raging hormones. As a regular or super buff adult, Dave is a scrappy, suspicious, arrogant, melodramatic, and self-centered wise guy. His strongest and most useful form is also his shortest and most unreliable stage. As an elder, he is paranoid and comedic.

History

Dave has been around since the The Great Mutant Outbreak began over 200 years ago due to the restorative properties of his molting cycle. There used be hundreds of insect Mutes just like him all named Dave until a group of humans called the Fanatics that have haven at war with the Daves found out how to permanently kill them and wiped them out leaving Dave the last of his kind. Many years later, he would actually bond a young boy Benson who was the sole survivor of the Fanatics and they became best friends.

About ten years before the beginning of the series, Dave had dined and dashed at the restaurant Brunchington Beach.

Season 1

Dave is a mute that can transform himself into many different forms- including a baby, a grub, and an adult. Kipo and Wolf stumble upon Dave, as he is in baby form, when they hear him crying. They run to shush the baby so that the Mod Frogs don't find them.

Benson finds the group and explains that the baby is his friend Dave. Dave, along with Benson, joins the gang in their adventure to find Kipo's burrow.

Season 2

Dave and Kipo's group set out to save the humans from Scarlemagne. First, they all go to the Chevre Sisters, where they learn that they must go to Kipos' parents' old burrow to discover more information about Kipo's powers.

The gang heads to Brunchington Beach for more information about the burrow's location. Cappuccino recognizes Dave and accuses him of dining and dashing ten years earlier. She sentences him to ten years worth of dish cleaning duty, but along with the help of one of the mob frogs, he escapes.

Dave, Kipo, Wolf, and Benson head to the land of the Deathstalkers to find the entrance to the burrow. Benson and Dave set a few explosions to distract the Deathstalkers from Kipo and Wolf.

They reunite in the burrow to get Kipo's anchor so that they can go fight Scarlemagne and save all of the humans. They manage to save everyone and get away, before finding out that Emilia has convinced the humans to follow her in her quest to demutate all mutes.

Season 3

Dave supports Kipo and the others as they try to hunt down Dr. Emilia and the rest of the humans, knowing that they are trying to create a cure for the mutes. They can't find her anymore but finally realize she is on a cruise ship.

After an old acquaintance (and enemy) of Wolf begs her for help rescuing her brother, Wolf agrees and Benson and Dave tag along. The group goes to Deathstalker territory. Benson and Dave try to protect Wolf from Margot, not trusting her.

Margot admits that she is part of Emilia's plan to trap Wolf and the others, but she tries to offer them a chance to escape. Emilia and her people surround them with weapons and say “No you can’t”.

Wolf, Dave, and Benson are tied up in Emilia's lab but Kipo comes to the rescue to save them. They get out and go back to safety.

After a few mutes get “cured”, Kipo is enraged and wants revenge on Emilia. Dave tries talking sense into Kipo telling her that fighting is not always the answer. He tells a story about how he fought humans for years, all for a stupid fan, but that it brought him to Benson. They fought until the realized they could just be friends and everything would be better. Kipo ultimately listens to Dave and doesn't attack Emilia.

Five Years Later

Five years later, Dave has become a guest science lecturer for the Newton wolves, which is mostly just him speaking nonsense.

Trivia

  • A recurring gag in the first season is Dave turning buff after the danger passes and turning old in the worst moment possible.
    • This has become less frequent since Twin Beaks, when he turned his right hand in his buff state at will. After this, he slowly gains more control over his buff form.
    • This implied that Dave never tried to control his buff form before.
  • According to Ben Mekler, the team working on the show could not agree "how many wives Dave had over his 200 years of life."[1]
  • Dave is the oldest character in the entire series, being around during the The Great Mutant Outbreak.
  • There was almost a scene where Dave was reborn and split into two Daves. [2]
    • They would have done Rock Paper Scissors to decide who leaves and who stays with the group.
  • When asked for how he could die in "Requiem for a Dave", Dave replies that he is not falling for that again, impling, that he told that secret someone before.
  • According to the gang, Dave is the only mute who is capable of speaking different languages outside of the known languages the remaining humans know of.
  • Dave is loosely based off a friend of Rad.[3]
